Frizzy Hair? Start With a Gentler Hair-Care Routine

Posted by Roy Yehia on

If your hair looks frizzier than you would like, start by looking at the routine around it. You do not have to make perfectly straight hair your goal. You may simply want curls that are easier to style, fewer flyaways or a smoother blow-dry.

Work out what you want to change

Make a short note of when the problem happens: immediately after washing, after a blow-dry, later in the day or mostly at the ends. Bring photos of your hair both styled and air-dried. This gives your stylist more useful information than a single inspiration photograph.

Keep the basics gentle

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing products for your hair type, conditioning after washing, detangling gently and avoiding rough towel rubbing. It also recommends limiting hot-tool use and choosing low or medium heat with a heat-protection product. These are practical starting points for a routine that is easier on your hair.

Change one part of your routine at a time so you can tell what helps. For example, try gentler drying before buying several new styling products at once. Follow each product’s directions rather than assuming that more product means a better result.

Bring your routine to your next appointment

Write down the shampoo, conditioner and styling products you use, how frequently you use heat, and any recent colour or chemical treatment. Ask your stylist which one or two changes are most relevant to your hair. Your cut, the finish you want and the time you can spend styling should all be part of that conversation.

Do I need a smoothing treatment?

A smoothing treatment may be worth discussing if manageability remains your main concern. It is a separate decision from choosing a daily conditioner. Be clear about whether keeping your curl pattern matters to you, and ask about the exact formula and realistic outcome before booking.

Our keratin guide explains the questions to ask. The treatment comparison helps you understand why product names alone are not enough.
